Mobile Awareness Program
According to the official reports from the Katunayake Police Station and the Child and Women’s Bureau, as well as the reports received through the WAVE app by the SUML organization, there has been an increase in incidents of violence and exploitative behaviors occurring among migrant workers in this area, which are linked to social vulnerabilities. Furthermore, there has been a noticeable rise in the issues faced by the children of these workers. As a response to this, we conducted an awareness program, going door to door in the area of the Katunayake Free Trade Zone, which has a high concentration of residential accommodations. This initiative was aimed at informing boarding house owners and workers.
The key stakeholders involved in this program included the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the Women and Child Affairs Bureau at the Katunayake Police Station, along with another officer from the same unit. During the program, the issue of women facing difficulties in seeking justice due to their reluctance to approach the police was discussed. As a solution to this challenge, we introduced the workers and boarding house owners to the OIC, providing them with a direct point of contact within the police station to encourage their engagement and offer support.
Additionally, the program introduced the WAVE app to the participants and informed them about other ongoing campaigns we are conducting, ensuring they were aware of all available resources and initiatives.
